In September 2012, RDWales secured planning permission for a 20MW Diesel Fired Peaking Plant at Trecwn Valley, near Fishguard, Pembrokeshire.
The Peaking Plant will comprise of a number of reciprocating diesel fired generator engines. These generators are of the ‘packaged power station’ type where all of the engine components for each generator are housed within an acoustically enclosed container. This type of generator has several advantages over conventional engines, the main one being that the container will limit any discernible noise emissions from the plant. These types of packaged power stations are also easier to maintain, easier to transport to site and have lower visual impacts. Their main benefit is that they can respond rapidly and export power at a moment’s notice which helps stabilise power supply from intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar.
RD Wales have other peaking plants projects in the pipeline, a 20MW Peaking Project at Swansea is currently under developments. Further information will be made available through the website as the projects progress.
